7- Concept
Op Channel is a tribute to opto-kinetic art, contained within a 1960's vintage TV set. It investigates the perceptual aspects of representation, inherits other formal concerns of mid-20th century artists and updates them through the use of contemporary technologies.
Optical illusions in motion appear through the circular opening in the center of the screen. The dynamic composition has been generated procedurally: the same algorithm that draws linear tensors determines the relationship between the position and colour of the lines. The result is the study of linear shapes in motion, forming and deforming themselves in an unexpectedly deep, three-dimensional space.
The decomposition of light into spectra, caused by the front lens, reinforces the illusion of a space of unexpected and changing depth. The movement of the observer further determines the perception of the artwork; it requires an active vision, instead of a passive observer.
